Students signing up for a ‘sugar daddy’
The phrase "sugar daddy" has long been used to describe a rich, older man who lavishes gifts and attention on a much younger partner. But today there is more to the concept than paying for presents and holidays. Today's sugar daddies are said to be funding university degrees for young women who can't afford tuition fees of up to £9,000 per year. According to figures from a dating website, 61 female students from the University of Nottingham – the most from any UK university – have signed up to its service to match them with wealthy men who can help. Faced with an average £53,000 of debt over three years, students are logging on to SeekingArrangement.com to ease their financial worries. The agreement is simple: the women who sign up to the site go on dates with rich, older men who pay them for their time. As there is no promise of sex, it is classed as escorting and is legal.
